I built two of these dog homes a couple years ago, and now that most of my dogs have passed on I’m only in need of one, so I’m hoping to at least get some of the material costs back from this one. Made from all birch hardwood plywood, the walls are two layers of plywood with 1/2” rigid foam sandwiched in between for a doubled walled construction 1/2” plywood on the inside, 1/4” on the outside. The floor is two 1/2” plywood layers around 1/2” rigid foam core. And the ceiling/roof is constructed of two 1/4” plywood layers around 1.5” of rigid foam. The doorways has a UV rated, waterproof vinyl to help with heat retention, and I installed a heat lamp with a low wattage reptile heat lamp bulb, as the house is so well insulated a red bulb would be much too hot. Shingled roof is waterproof however has always been under cover to prevent any wear and tear. I refinished the inside and underside with spar urethane, a very strong water resistant coating, and painted/refinished/sealed the outside walls and doorway. A fair amount of work and thought went into this dog home, as I cared greatly about my dogs comfort, being an outside dog in wintertime with a stable/warm dog home. I also outfitted the dog home I’m keeping with a thermostat, so temperature is always a stable 60-65 degrees regardless of the weather or time of year, which is highly recommend.
